A managed care pharmacy is a specialized branch of pharmacy that focuses on the optimization of pharmaceutical care within a managed care environment. Managed care pharmacies are responsible for the selection, distribution, utilization, and monitoring of medications in the context of “payors” (health plans, insurance systems, and healthcare organizations) aimed at improving health outcomes while controlling costs. These pharmacies play a central role in formulary management, drug utilization review (DUR), medication therapy management (MTM), and the implementation of strategies to promote the safe, effective, and cost-efficient use of medications across patient populations.
